This is going to be a long post because I really want to get as much info out there, but first let me just get this over and said quickly: The sites appear to be gone for good.

I don't know how much you guys know about the leadership of the sites, I didn't really know them well, so I want to explain that first.
In the past there were plenty of staff members, that's a fact known to anyone who went to the thread listing current and past staff, but at the time right before it shut down there were really just 3.  Seidh (Scott), our admin in red text, Pegasus, our coder in green text, and Weezee (Karrie), our amazing artist in Purple.  They are/were the ones in interacting with us, trying to keep the site afloat.  They'd listen to our ideas and try to get stuff done for us.
The only other top person was Tarsupin (Brint), the owner of the site.  I never knew much about him and you probably didn't either, unless you spoke with people who had directly interacted with him.  And if you did, that was probably either the three staff members, or someone who was banned or had quit.

Brint was the one who came up with the idea for the site, and was apparently constantly coming up with new ones.  This seems great! But in reality, it was apparently poorly done.   He refused to take critique and advice from anyone else, and evidently when people got too loud and start to get upset that they were not being heard, they would get banned.
One ex-coder for the site said they would try to tell Brint that his ideas just couldn't work, but he would shut them down everyime. That person went on to say that the site HAD its peak, UF4 (which I might agree with, I was there), and express his disappointment in Brint for planting the seed but not watering it, and scaring people into silence.  The ex-coder finally ended with saying that they didn't believe Brint was never interested in Unifaction for anything but money, and that when he was done he dropped it like so many other project ideas.

Now I remember those ideas, though some of you might not have been there for them.   I honestly remember thinking Brint's ideas were great and that they probably didn't take off just because it was a small site and he didn't have the support.  Now it seems he didn't have the support because he didn't want to compromise, and he pushed all of his support away.

These claims against the owner might seem harsh or unrealistic in this time to us who were either newer to the site, or low enough in its users that we didn't hear the drama from higher up... but more and more similar stories resurface now that they don't fear prosecution and it starts to paint a pretty grim case against Brint.
Another older and respected user confirmed the ex-coder's money comment with "I'm sure every month when he had to pay the hosting fee, it burned him a new one. It also doesn't surprise me that he shut the sites down without any notice. It also doesn't surprise me that he didn't offer the sites to Seidt, since lacking in wisdom and being full of self-delusion common sense are highlights of how he acted while owner of the sites."

It is important to note here that I don't know Brint personally, so I really cannot curse him or say anything about him personally that is going to ring entirely true.  But I can say that after hearing how he tried to run things that the CHOICES he made and his "leadership" skills were apparently poor and the Uni-Verses couldn't sate the apparent power-hungriness behind the pretty avatar he had.

Now, we weren't trying to spread hate in the group of us all talking, really.  We were trying to keep it to facts and short stories as everyone explained things that had happened in the past, and this is obvious to anyone reading the stories because they do not get too personal.  But even then, there is some animosity that might leak out... and that'd fair, isn't it?  We cannot expect to entirely be the higher people when we have been so wronged.  It's not just a fun game site we lost.  Some of us lost years of hard work in collections of their pets, years of work in creating avatars and getting new items for them constantly, and lots of us probably lost friends with whom we only had contact though these sites. I for one lost a great place to make connections and have a friendly platform to share my art and make things for people.
Not only that, but there is all of the hard work that the official artists but into the site.  Not just the ones who made any of the hundreds of digital drawings for every pet, avatar clothing, and UC item... but the writers who worked on the lore of the world and the animals.  There wasn't an official writer at the time listed in the admins thread, so I'm not sure who was creating the newer creatures, but there was writers listed there before.
All of their work is now lost to them, unless they saved it somewhere (because we certainly didn't, how were we supposed to know this was going to happen?).   Even then if they have it, they only are able to use it as part of their portfolios saying they helped with this awesome site in it's time.  But every piece of artwork belongs technically to Brint to do with as he pleases, and we cannot do anything with the characters but look fondly at them in our memory, and make fan art.

Someone mentioned that some of the original characters were his ideas, or based off his drawings, so I can understand why he's being possessive to a point.  And aside from that, Unifaction and Unicreatures was his idea . . . but it is very sad to think that he would rather close it down and lock it up than see it go on without him, or compromise with his users, or even just leave it open but stop updates so that it dies more naturally.

So where do we go from here?

Before we got the update on what really happened between Seidh and Brint and why the site went down, we were talking amongst ourselves wondering if we should even go back or not, if we were to disband to our other pet sites with our friends, or if something new should be created without UC/UF.  One user said that after being treated in this way, she would rather go with Seidh and Pegasus to a new site than go back to UF with it being in its current leadership.  Only if Brint gave it up would she go back, or else she'd just try to get in contact with the people she could and get out.
I personally would go back to the site if it came back up, even under old ownership.  But if that were the case, I would remove everything of mine from UniFaction and focus mainly on the UC... especially if our main 3 ended up not being there.  I would save everything I could that I loved from those fantastic sites... and then ride the waves until it eventually died again.

But I probably won't get the chance.  Yesterday, Seidh posted this:
"Ok so many of you are wondering what happened. I'm sure you're looking to me for answers as I was the site admin. I don't know a whole lot but I can tell you what I do know. Back in December I had a conversation with Brint about taking over UF and UC; After thinking on that conversation, I had another with Pegasus and a few others, about what it would take to rebuild the site from scratch - making it much more user friendly (like it was on 5) with a much smoother design. Then Saturday I conversed again with him to discuss the details of everything. I could not work with his terms; I wanted him removed from the site entirely - paid only in royalties for any artwork sold. A few minutes later I am blocked on 3 messengers, facebook and the sites are offline.
So back to the conversation with Pegasus...We formed a team back in December after the initial chat with the site owner. We hashed a few things out and she began doing her magic. Now we cannot use any UF or UC artwork that all belongs to he who shall not be named but we can rebuild the community forums and over time all new avatars and items; we have 2 artists on board already. The forums SHOULD be ready to launch as early as this weekend. What we need are name suggestions, hosting and domains need to be worked out as well. - This is your chance for some ground level input*
Hopefully this answers some questions you guys have. I don’t know much, but I do know I love the community that was Unifaction, I would not have devoted so much of myself to the site with no compensation or acknowledgement from the site owner. So we hope you guys are behind us in this venture; we really are excited to see what we can do for you guys with a blank slate!"

This of course can come as a huge blow to many of the users, but to plenty it was expected.

in the chaos that Brint left, it is beautiful to note how so many users (over 80!) got together and are so willing and hoping to keep our family together, despite being currently homeless.  Our old staff members love us SO much that they want to keep us the community we built as one.
This is of course going to be slow-going, however. I'm sure building a new site always is. Right now we still need and are thinking about site names (feel free to suggest some here, I'll pass them along!) and there is only going to be a forum set up for the time being.  They aren't certain just yet about an adoptables site, but they are planning for it! It would take a lot of coding and images and writing to make an adoptable site, so it's not as important as the forums.  As for the avatars, the artists are working on new bases but have not yet done much more, as it is understandably overwhelming.

So.  Thinking back on all of the copyrights things I mentioned earlier, creating a new site might seem hopeless to some.  I can hear it now: "there were so many creative creatures and outfits I loved on there, and we can't even have them ever again! What's the point??"
Well.  I'll tell you.
UC/UF may own all of those old specific designs and character stories, but not the archetypes behind them.  Brint also doesn't have a hold on the idea of evolving adaptables, or things that we had for avatar items like tee-shirts and jeans.
Pick your favorite Unicreature.  Paww? that's just a winged cat.  As long as we do not take the same pose, design, or personality from UC or any other site we can make as many winged cats as we want.  Melody? Anex? they're just mermaids.  Lazuli? She's a harpy.  Heck one of the creatures was just a tree.  There's plenty of  trees in the world to draw inspiration from and have new characters like that.
Then there is avatar clothing... with a different base and pallet that enough is good to take old, plain ideas and use them again (like plain collars, converse shoes, and vest-tops.)  There are going to be some things we lose and cannot take, like exact designs for dresses and jewelry (even redrawn on a new base, the design does not belong to us), and backgrounds... But we have an amazing creative staff that I'm sure will grant us plenty of beautiful things in our family's future.

If all you really loved about the old site was the pets, or you're too upset at the time to try to stay with the community and move with us to a new place, then that is fine if you don't want to stick around.
But really, the people who made everything happen for the owner and for us are the best part.  The artists, the writers, the coders. . .  They want to keep us together in a safe community, even if that means working really hard to build a new home from scratch.  I am truly excited for the new place, and what can come of it.
Though it will no longer be Unifaction or Unicreatures, it will be made up of it's people moving on from the wreckage.  So I will post any more new information that comes up on the new place here on this group.

In the meantime, would you like to share fond memories of UC and UF? Tell us your favorite things about the old site. What did you love, what will you miss, what would you want in a new community that we build?

Naming Update:

Scott Langdom, Seidh, just posted this on facebook:
"So we have brainstormed and brainstormed and done it all some more and these are the ones we have narrowed down to:
(*this list is subject to change)
Arendria
Ealderwyn
Kaldrazar
Lorendria
Lumindria
Nevrmore
Orendia
Orendria
PortLuminia
Solendria
Sorandria
Sorendria

We will be setting up a voting system of some sort real soon (this will be edited once that happens) to help us narrow it down!"

I don't know the meaning behind any of them, but a few are rather pretty.  When we are given the link to the poll, or the list changes, I will update this again.

:iconnew-plz:
We have a link to the poll now! boop.

Important! Seidh posted "(the poll) will come down at 4:30pm EST Sunday January 24".  Make sure you've voted if you want a say, and to tell others that it's closing in less than 24 hours.

TL;DR

It seems that the owner of UC and UF is acting totally irrational, and the sites seem to be gone for good.  But the community that was built within them is sticking together, and with its talented and skilled leaders we are hoping to build a new home.

Excellently written.  Thank you for the information.  I am trying to find out how Brint can be contacted to find out if he would re-consider selling UF and UC to the old users.  Wish me luck.

This was indeed a sad turn of events. Although I came and went a lot, I was glad to be part of the community. Is there any news of the new site?

It's awful, it really is. This probably won't help, but it's somewhat useful to know in the future if you may need it. At first, maybe ten or so members were talking about how Paypal has this couple (or few?) months or so clause, if the buyer doesn't get what they bought within that time frame, they can go through Paypal to get it back. So if anyone bought any credits within the couple months of when the site went down (or we all realized), you could possibly get all that money back. The vindictive part of me loves this idea, I spent hundreds of dollars on UF & UC (they were my favorite sites!), and I can't access any of it anymore.

At least we have Lorendria now (check comments for temporary forum link, and/or group front page journal entry for more updates). unicreatures.deviantart.com/

I just found the site and thought it would be fun to play but now that I read this I feel a little sad. Its always sad when a site like this one gets shut down, and I've had my fare share of these types of experiences. But... Well, if the site ever does re-open would you let me know? I would love to play it. :D

I'm glad that I found this, I wasn't aware of what had happened to the site...all I knew was that one day I was trying to log in, then let my little brother log into his account, and everything was gone. I figured it had been closed down for some reason, but now that I know the reason.....that really sucks.

I was a member from 2009 on, and I was mostly a forum lurker although I did post at times. Most of my time and effort had gone into the pet part....I had gotten ten of the Dendros in various stages of their evolution, in every range of rarity that we could get, including the one that was way beyond exalted. I'd even put some money into the site for the ones that I had really liked which we could not get any other way.

All that work and fun over the years....just gone because one person is acting like a spoiled little brat who can't handle change? That sucks.

But I definitely know that I will be keeping an eye out for the new site, it will surely be amazing.

Ahh!  Sorry, I'm only really ever on DA towards the end of the year for NaNoWriMo and the December Form Challenge, and I completely forgot I posted on here about Unicreatures/Unifaction. x.x  Yes!  I finally found the new temporary site my own self: it's lorendria.proboards.com/

My sister is doing...okay, for the most part.  She still relapses occasionally, but it seems to be rarer than it has been.  Ryan and I are doing well!  We're looking at getting out of Oklahoma, possibly moving to Colorado, so some exciting things are in discussion right now. :D

So after Uni6, I was only on sporadically, but I went through three incarnations of Uni: Irial (Uni4), Synnove (Uni5, and likely how most people remember me), and Therin (Uni6).  One of my RL friends asked me about UniFaction the other day and I was like, yeah, I haven't logged on in months, wonder how everyone's doing...to find this.  Even though Uni6 never really felt like home to me the way Uni5 did, I'm just floored by all this.  I shouldn't be, but I am.  What upsets me the most--more than the money and time I sank into both UniFaction and UniCreatures--is how I tried to stand by Brint, and I know I wasn't the only one.  Even after so many people quit, a lot of us continued to support him, and I can't help but feel that he took advantage of that.  Wow.  Way to take your ball and go home, Brint.  You sure showed us.

I was EirianHikari/SweetViolet on from Uni4 through 6.

I've been wondering for months what had happened, I'd been looking for the fb page but couldn't find it, now I know why. T.T
I had no idea any of this had happened, and sad to say, I've lost all respect for Brint.

I'm very happy to see the community coming together though! I was also Ecstatic to see the new name is going to be Lorendria! Before I read that I was looking at the options, and that was my favorite! I will definitely be on board for joining!

God, I can't believe that it's gone. I joined all the way back in '09 and that avatar site had been the place for my inspiration for character outlines. I had been looking for the site for months, and now to realize that everything is gone? I feel like I just lost a whole family.

I was there for three Uni incarnations, counting that last horror.  It was home for a long time; I think it was the first place where I finally stopped being afraid of forums.  But then the drama and the banning started.  Unda's sense of humor and fashion made me uncomfortable often.  And then we got those octopuses on UC, and I left.  It was just too much for me.  I'd come back a week or so before the sites went down, because a friend earnestly entreated me to, but I didn't really see anything happening there.  The hangouts for favourite games weren't there, and there were no avatars on the profile walls, which always had been the detail that I loved the most.

Ah, so this is what happened. Dang.

I don't really remember exactly when I joined, though some may remember me from there. But I don't count on it since I was lurker.

Mainly spent time in UC since UF wasn't really my thing. I remember just staring at pretty avatars and me noping my way out at times for not having as pretty avatar, heh. Thought that the plain avatar I had was... well... too plain for others.
And farming of the money... hard if you're not active. >:

I remember the old mini-games at UC though and wandering in the places. And the ungodly amount of wandering I did after opening all the Ninja boxes that I received after long absences, haha...

Yeah... I guess my mind at some level was nagging about something, since I didn't feel that close to community... unfortunately. Then again, I was also badly messed up from anxiety issues in my life that I didn't make enough attempt for it.

Already have 4 adoptable sites under belt for things, but I'll see if I can squeeze the time for possibly 5th one. Just to try the ice and see how things go for this new one.

Was reminiscing again and damn... I still have some attachments to some of the smaller projects that he started that failed (which really should've warned me about what would eventually happen to UF and UC)...

I was so pumped about ARC. I don't remember what it stood for. But I do remember that there were a bunch of small things on it that were sorta like missions to improve UF and UC. Acid found antepenultimate through ARC. She did a ton of good stuff and he appointed her as mod and later as UC admin. It was through ARC that we got the revamped descriptions for Nagi and Twap when we moved to Era 2.

Remember Flarius Games? There was a tetris game! I think he was trying to recruit more artists for it via ARC. I and someone else accepted the mission thing and I think we had to produce examples and then he would choose one of us to join the Flarius Games team. I still have this page: nickjrimages.webs.com/arc.htm I haven't touched it in years. Yes, my work was horribly amateur LOL but it was fun. OH AND THERE ARE SOME UC PICS ON THERE but some are incomplete and all of them are against a background and some are transparent haha... also, the blocks were meant to be shrunk, so I think the pics with awful quality would look much better when smaller lol

There was the Starborn thingy... He put up a kickstarter for it. I think it was similar to Minecraft? But it was unrelated to UC.

There was the UC TCG! I was awful at it but I loved it! Then it died.

Then the cards made a reappearance in Esme's Protectors! Someone gave $5 or so under my name because I really wished that I was to give money myself... And I got a character in the game! Sarie! (barely related to the Sarie character that I keep posting art of on my dA) The black-haired tan-ish girl with a skirt over her pants and a red top! Super hyper and I think she appeared before the game of hide-and-seek with another person. I loved the Esme's Protectors thing... I think it was a super cool idea.

I feel so bad that the $5 or $10 or whatever it was got wasted. :(

I feel like there's one more...

God I'm still sad

I am sad. I joined in 2009 and the unisites have been the heaven which I could go visit when I had one of my down-times emotionally. The community always had a way of making me feel less alone, find more fun in the world than I could see at that moment. Help me find meaning etc. And at other times when I wasn't so blue, I had fun times, and laughed so my stomach hurt. I remember most fondly the party of 2013, the 28 july (I still have the icon made from that one ^^) It was  birthday party, if I dont remember totally wrong at 4 in the morning. And I still remember Sooths conversation with someone... was it weezee? Anyway, it was hilarious XD!! I almost died of laughter hehe.

I remember MamaD and her thread before she had to leave and a lot of us wrote on her card/thread that we wished her well, she had helped keep a lot of us on the site up in positive spirits. And Jeffs hearts and kisses and SMOOOCHES! Love everywhere ^.^ And everyone who gifted everyone things left, right and center. Everyone was awesome.

So yes. I am, along with a lot of other people that is/was my friends, sad that all of my memories that I haven't saved are gone. My friendlist. All my little personal pages with information. All my siggies. My PETS! Omg! My pets. And my boxes and donation stuff etc etc. Gah! All that work - Farts in the wind *sigh*

But hopefully the new site will be good too. And I hope that a lot of the people will find their way back to it once it opens. =) so that we can all get back to our home of blue clouds of heaven and sunshine again.

Wow, I was surprised, but I guess I really shouldn't have been that the site is totally gone.  I had a great time on both UC and UF, but especially UF4. I never quite got adjusted to UF5, and, quite frankly, the last time I saw the site it looked so totally different, I didn't want to bother trying to figure it all out.  I miss some of my friends from UC and UF though, which is why I went looking for the site today - to try to send someone a PM. Found your article instead and so am very sad about the whole situation.

I had a couple of successful threads on UF (4 mainly):

Tru's Flower Shop, which SpecialDelivery started taking care of in my absence. I really appreciated her efforts.

I also had PicEggs, which although it was a lot of work, gave me quite a bit of satisfaction - seeing how happy people were with my crazy creations!

I would be interested to know when the new site begins!

I am not one bit surprised about this.  I was always put off by his behavior and finally left the site for good over a year ago.  After the art theft debacle and his completely classless and childish responses to criticism, I was done.

I hope that you are able to rebuild something amazing from the ashes that he left behind.

I think it was the January 2010 Fairytale Dresses? Might've gotten the year wrong but they were definitely in a January donation package.

The artist (forgot who) who drew them apparently took the design straight from someone's image on dA, posted in May 2008 or some early time like that. I don't think it was even eye-copied. I think it was directly traced.

A DMCA complaint was filed and the artist had to redraw the dress and Tarsupin had to get the old design replaced within 24 hours. He did this successfully.

I forgot what the backlash was about. I don't remember if he tried to cover it up or not. But there was backlash and the topic ended up being locked in response to the backlash. There might've been a separate thread made responding to the backlash. I don't remember anymore orz

Yes, that's the one.  It was a near exact trace.  I talked to the original artist about it and Brint's behavior was ridiculous when confronted - she took MANY steps before the DMCA was filed.  I have our conversation saved and it still infuriated me when I re-read it today.

Wonder if I can get the rights to my pets to continue making illustrations. After all with the exception of a few characters that the writers wrote they were all mainly my own idea.

If you drew some of the original artwork and didn't especifically give your rights of ownership over it is your to use. If you gave your rights away or agreed to take part after accepting a disclaimer that stated it, for example a contest to add a creature or an item, then only on noncommercial and/or satiric works.

No contests for me. :) I was part of the team that created the works. The agreement was deleted along with unification as it was only in private messages that they would be considered unicreatures. Trish was the one who had the agreement since she was art director at the time.

As far as the other team members I have spoken to, the writing is still property of the writer. The designs are still mine. Only Nevar and Nishiki were characters that came from anthers concept. Stephy and Erin.

All the others were my own creation. Good chance though, that the elements held in the hands of the Yawn family are not mine by right. The character is mine but the objects are not.

If I just need to double check with Mr. Site Creator. That is if I can get ahold of him. Last thing I want is backlash, ya know? :D

I do remember when I did my painting of Issette that the crew, including Brint, had pretty much said that since I designed it then I could go for it. Which is why it's in my shops. It was only when painting creatures that were not mine that I had to get permission from the artist who did do them. Old times. I'm still gonna miss the crew. Only a hand full kept in contact over the years.
